Exhibition
Included in this exhibition are eggshell inlay pieces, which have three dimensional elements that extend beyond direct contact with clothing, as well as a recently completed rare eggshell necklace begun thirty-three years ago. Also featured are works that delve into the qualities of translucency and opacity and the way they alter color and light—the ethereal subspace where air is incorporated into these works to enhance the light and allow the work to "breath."
Thomas Gentille's work can be found in countless public and private collections throughout the world. He is the winner of both the Herbert Hofmann Prize (2001) and Bavarian State Prize (2004), and was designated a "Modern Classic" at Schmuck, in Munich, in 2006. In October 2018, Gentille was inducted into the prestigious American Craft Council College of Fellows.

This installation was designed with the intention of being disseminated over time. In fact, this installation will not be complete until each and every element is plucked from the surface and taken to a new home. Every piece that is acquired will be disseminated, signed, and editioned by the artist. Once an element is removed from the installation, Wiegand tracks the latitude and longitude of where it will live. This data is plotted on a map accessible to all who choose to follow the project.
Anyone who would like to contribute to this project is invited to visit Wiegand’s website at noellewiegand.com, contact the artist at noellewiegand@gmail.com to purchase a wearable pin, and view the interactive map here.
During the week of NYCJW, Dissemination lives within the window of 266 W 37th St. and is on view 24 hours a day. The project is supported by Chashama.
About Chashama:
Chashama supports artists by giving them space to create and present their work, while fostering community development through the arts. Chashama was founded in 1995 in response to the lack of affordable space for emerging artists in New York City. Through partnerships with property owners we re-purpose unused real estate into space for artists. Chashama gives artists work and presentation spaces, and provides free art workshops in underserved communities.
About the Artist:
Noelle Wiegand graduated from Ball State University with degrees in Metals, Glass, and Art History in 2017. Upon graduation, Wiegand relocated to New York City. She has been an active member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, Glass Art Society, and the Academic Association of Museums and Galleries. Her work has won awards in both National and International exhibitions. She has been a visiting lecturer, has taught, and has assisted workshops. Wiegand is currently on the New York City Jewelry Week team as the head of Programming and Partner Development, utilizing her interest in all facets of the jewelry industry and her personal desire to support expansion of NYCJW’s diverse programming agenda. She currently lives and works in Queens, NY.

JEAN-CLAUDE BONILLO (1939 -1917) – The Art of Jewelry By Fire
Magen H Gallery
54 East 11th St., New York, NY
Magen H Gallery and guest curator Marie-Alexandrine Yvernault are pleased to present a retrospective dedicated to French jewelry designer Jean-Claude Bonillo.
The exhibition will include sixty pieces in bronze or gold plated silver, each unique piece sculpted by the artist's hand. A true multidisciplinary artist and a brilliant sculptor, Bonillo's jewels are the result of his fascination with fire, fusion and the work of forging.
Although all his creations were first imagined to adorn the female body with a desire to make it beautiful, Jean-Claude Bonillo's work also integrates an important esoteric dimension. He invokes the richness of the jewels' symbolism, "which in its primitive form is a mediator between the person who wears it and the universe" and draws his inspiration from the nature surrounding it, so that its sculpted forms evoke almost always the four elements, revealed by fire.
The exhibition runs Monday, November 12th - Friday, November 16th.
Join us for a cocktail reception celebrating the event on Wednesday November 14th from 6:00 - 8:00pm.

Exhibition
Exhibition Overview
The exhibition will open with a dramatic installation that emphasizes the universality of jewelry—precious objects made for the body, a singular and glorious setting for the display of art. Great jewelry from around the world will be presented in a radiant display that groups these ornaments according to the part of the body they adorn: head and hair; nose, lips, and ears; neck and chest; arms and hands; and waist, ankles, and feet.
The remaining galleries will be organized thematically in order to encourage visitors to make cross-cultural comparisons. The Divine Body will examine one of the earliest conceptions of jewelry—its link to immortality. Featured here will be a rare head-to-toe ensemble from ancient Egypt that accompanied the elite into the afterlife, as well as items from the Royal Cemetery of Ur, implicated in one of the most mysterious rituals of ancient Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq). Also highlighted will be the regalia of the rulers of Calima (present-day Colombia), who were lavishly covered in sheets of gold.
Exhibition runs November 12, 2018- February 24, 2019.
An exclusive NYCJW curatorial-led tour will take place on Tuesday, November 13th.

“ANTIQUEMANIA” Exhibition
Pratt Institute Manhattan Gallery, SCPS Gallery (2nd Floor)
144 West 14th St., NY, New York 10011
Artists Jennifer Trask and Miranda Leigh search for ideals of beauty and the perfection of natural forms through historical motifs. Trask’s work is iconic for her fanciful use of bone and actual antique fragments, like transforming a 17th-century gilded frame into a neckpiece. Leigh’s Greek water vessel earrings vividly convey her artist statement, “it is a privilege to create jewels from noble materials that celebrate our most precious memories and desires.”
Inspired by Georgian and Victorian memento mori, Melanie Bilenker and Rachel Andrea Davis use hair to portray memories of domestic intimacy and lost love, respectively; while Kelly Jean Conroy creates memorials dedicated to the natural world and her childhood using bone and taxidermied animals. Alicia Jane Boswell’s lace and enamel jewels distill a familiar sense of fragility and longing for the past.
At Jewelry Arts Inc., Jeanette Caines and Mike Ellis teach ancient jewelry making techniques of granulation, chasing, repoussé, and enameling. Here their work is juxtaposed with Isabelle Busnell and Ashley Buchannan’s interpretations of historical forms using new materials. Busnel molds 18th-century style stomachers, bow earrings, and Baroque architectural details out of silicone rubber while Buchanan distills historical jewelry forms into powder-coated silhouettes.

Conversation Pieces That Catch the Eye: Johnny Nelson Jewelry
Project No. 8 at Ace Hotel
22 W 29th St, New York, NY 10016
Johnny Nelson Jewelry was founded in 2017 by Johnny Nelson. Each piece is proudly crafted in NYC using various fine metals and stones.
The line was brought to fruition long before it’s initial inception. Nelson’s transition into jewelry design began in 2014, when he was on tour and decided it was time to look as good as he felt while performing. His solution? Jewelry. The first piece was an attention-grabbing 3-finger ring, made with stone and wire, that he asked his mom to bring to life. It was then Nelson found he had not just a genuine passion for jewelry, but the raw talent and creative vision to match.
In his designs, Nelson draws inspiration from his diverse artistic and cultural experiences that merge punk, hip hop and spirituality. The line heavily focuses on statement pieces that spark conversation amongst consumers.
Johnny Nelson was born in England and raised in Brooklyn. His biggest influences include Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and the iconic neighborhood jewelers that elevated hip hop culture in the 80s and 90s.
Various Projects presents this show with Johnny Nelson from November 12th - 18th on view daily from 11:00am - 7:00pm within Project No. 8 at the Ace Hotel.

“Fake News and True Love: Fourteen Stories” by Robert Baines
Museum of Arts and Design
2 Columbus Cir, New York, NY 10019
The Museum of Arts and Design presents a clever examination of jewelry as a document of popular cultural history. Robert Baine's fanciful pieces and accompanying “evidence” encourage belief in the fourteen stories he presents. Baines has fabricated alternate realities that span from B.C.E. to the present day and encompass an equally wide range of topics, including migration, conspiracy, forgery, celebrity, and politics. His rings, parures, neckpieces, and bracelets show the misunderstandings that design can create, emphasizing the constructed nature of collective history. Through satire and humor, he cautions that linear narration can be confused with myth, riddle, puzzle, and possible subversions of history. Is the story true or fake?
Exhibition runs October 16, 2018 - March 3, 2019. The Museum is open Tuesday, November 13th - Sunday, November 18th. The museum is open between 10:00am - 6:00om, with extend hours until 9:00pm on Thursday, November 15th.

Curatorial-Led Tour of “Jewelry: The Body Transformed”
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
1000 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028

Panel
Panelists:
Ana-Katarina of AnaKatrina
Deirdre Featherstone of Featherstone Design
Katrin Zimmermann of Ex Ovo
Lisa Salzar-Wiles of Lulu Frost
Marla Aaron of Marla Aaron
The panel is moderated by industry leader Amanda Gizzi, Director of Public Relations and Special Events at Jewelers of America.
JB Jones, co-founder of NYCJW, is proud to introduce this exceptional panel of NYC-based women.
Ana-Katrina Throughout her extensive humanitarian travel and profound experiences as a war correspondent, Ana-Katarina Vinkler-Petrovic has been driven by her passion for social justice and inspired by the staggering beauty of the exotic and the everyday. “I keep a visual lexicon in my consciousness created from my background, history, travels, passions and experiences. When I design, this internal library opens to bring forth the inspirations for my jewelry.”
The daughter of a world-renowned architect and an awarded painter, her transition into jewelry design began organically with private clients who recognized Ana-Katarina’s intuitive eye. She has since been sought out for commissions across the globe, among them for royal families of the Middle East. She collaborates with respected artisans- including a former Harry Winston master jeweler- to sculpt her pieces. For the wearer, these striking, sensual accessories transcend the category of fine jewelry; they become stunning personal signatures, future heirlooms and treasured talismans worn at every occasion.
Motivated by the tragedies she has witnessed and the legacy she is leaving behind for her 3 daughters, Ana-Katarina is committed to sourcing reclaimed, recycled, fair-trade, and precious materials. A member of Ethical Metalsmiths and AGTA (American Gem Trade Association), she passionately supports ethical and sustainable practices in the making of her collections so that each piece is not only treasure, but a powerful statement for social consciousness.
Ana-Katarina’s jewelry is proudly crafted in the United States and has been sold throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. It has been featured in private exhibitions worldwide and highlighted in national and international press.
Deirdre Featherstone Deirdre Featherstone comes to the world of jewelry with a terrifically discerning eye for both beauty and functionality.
As a former antique auctioneer, she appreciates the value and aesthetic of exquisitely beautiful things, but as a motorcycle and classic car enthusiast, she understands that even the most stunning things need to run smoothly and feel right.
As the hands, the eye, and the spirit of Featherstone Design, Deirdre has been designing and producing fine jewelry in her Tribeca studio since 1985.
Deirdre stepped from the world of antiques into the world of precious metals and stones bringing with her a love of beautifully crafted objects and the stories those objects have to tell.
Katrin Zimmermann Katrin, the designer of Ex Ovo, was born in Germany, and educated in Switzerland, England and China. While studying Chinese and Archaeology, she lived in China and traveled extensively in the Far East. Katrin came to New York for a vacation in 1991 and was immediately captured by the spirit of the city. The decision to study Jewelry Design at FIT in New York meant a complete change in the direction of her career. In 1992, she founded Ex Ovo, and in 1998 she was accepted to the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
Katrin speaks four languages and has lived on three continents in several countries. The exposure to so many different cultures is evident in her approach to design and is distilled into the striking simplicity of her pieces. She draws inspiration from a base that is multicultural, but her constant search for innovation makes each piece truly modern.
Katrin’s strongest influence is the Art and Cultural Heritage of the Far East. The focus of her design aesthetic is reduction; the emphasis on the essence of a stone, an organic shape or the inherent qualities of a material, whether synthetic or natural. The idea is to bring out singularity through simplicity.
"The beauty of an object lies in its uniqueness. My pieces have an inner tension of asymmetry–something I love to emphasize in my designs. I also juxtapose materials: soft intimate leather with the clear brilliance of silver; the classicism of semi-precious stones modified with casual rubber. I am trying to redefine the reasons for wearing jewelry, to give it new meaning. Jewelry can say more about one’s personality than most people acknowledge. It should never be an afterthought".
Ex Ovo is worn by Zaha Hadid, Arthur Cohen, Keith Richards and his dogs, Eartha Kitt, Liv Tyler, Noel Gallagher, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, Kate Moss, Lucie de la Falaise, Halle Berry, Nile Rodgers, Courtney Love, Rita Moreno, Britney Spears, and many others.
Lisa Salzer-Wiles Lulu Frost is a jewelry brand founded in New York City in 2004 by designer and CFDA member Lisa Salzer-WIles. Known for its statement blend of antique and modern elements, the ethos of Lulu Frost is naturally inherited from Lisa’s maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Rock Frost, who worked in the estate jewelry business for decades. From Victorian to Deco to contemporary influences, the Lulu Frost aesthetic represents an intersection of tradition and modernity.
The collections have garnered a devout following of diverse tastemakers including Beyoncé, former First Lady Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift, amongst others. Lisa has partnered with notable fashion designers including Alexander Wang, DKNY and Erin Fetherston as well as a long running collaboration with pioneering retailer J.Crew.
In early 2013, Lulu Frost debuted a unisex collection, George Frost, which is made in NYC and has been widely recognized for its ongoing collaboration with CFDA menswear Designer of the Year Michael Bastian. Lulu Frost and George Frost are internationally distributed and can be found within the doors of top retail and e-tail powerhouses, including Neiman Marcus, Barneys Japan, Liberty London and more.
Marla Aaron Marla Aaron launched her eponymous collection in 2013 when her combined obsessions with bridges, hardware and jewelry could no longer be ignored. The collection is sold all over the world. What began with one lock is now an entire collection designed to be worn in infinite ways and used as “jewel tools” with individuals’ own collections—to redefine the “precious” in jewelry with individuality. Although recognized for its streamlined, industrial look, the collection is deeply rooted in the personal and emotional jewelry of the Victorian and Georgian eras and has expanded to incorporate many other elements.
The company's rebellious approach to jewelry led to the December 2017 installation of their first jewelry vending machine at the Brooklyn Museum. Marla and her team are in the process of building more machines. The entire collection was on exhibit in 2016 in New York City at the Museum of American Finance in their exhibit, "Gold: Worth its Weight". Marla and her team release new designs regularly on Instagram first with no apparent rhyme or reason. The #lockyourmom Project, created by Marla, gives single moms sterling silver Baby Heartlocks just for them. To date Marla and her team have given out hundreds of Heartlocks to deserving single moms all over the country. The collection is proudly made and finished by hand in New York City.
Marla spent nearly 25 years as a global communications executive, serving in senior roles for publishers and advertising agencies in Europe and the United States. She was not very good at it. She resides in New York City with her husband, knitting and waiting for her children to come home from college to visit. When not doing this, she designs jewelry and posts obsessively on Instagram about said jewelry and just about anything that pops into her head.

Big Mouth Strikes Again and Again: #fail #success with emiko o
NYCJW HQ, Artists & Fleas Soho
568 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
More about emiko oye: My inner New Wave/Post Punk Romantic, Hedwig & The Angry Inch Groupie, and Salvador Dalí / Luis Buñuel Surrealist merged to create the Under The Killing Moon series of convertible lips made from repurposed LEGO®. Surrounded by images from glam glitter W Magazine fashion stories and Dalí’s jeweled “Ruby Lips”, there came a urge to create as many off-kilter lips as I could, as if candidly capturing the range of Desire; from coy to seductive, melancholy to violent. Luis Buñuel’s first Surrealist film in collaboration with Dalí, “Un Chien Andalou” (1929), was a beacon leading me on this journey, not only for it’s challenging visuals, but for its theme “to present the straight and pure ‘conduct’ of someone who continues to pursue love despite wretched humanitarian ideals, patriotism, and the other poor mechanisms of reality.”
Echo & The Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon” became the series’ torch song, setting the tone and inspiring other New Wave titles for the ensuing lip pieces. Upon close inspection the lips appear Neo- Impressionistic and abstract, but when viewed from afar the image clarifies – much like love in its first stages where true perspective is gained only with distance from it.
As a studio jeweler, I see art jewelry as a symbiotic relationship between maker and wearer. What I create not only should be the result of what deeply resonates within me, but more importantly what connects with my collectors, how it functions (or not) on the body, and its longevity and versatility. That said, I have an earnest desire to continually evolve my designs, keeping me in constant conversation with my works - how to deconstruct/reconstruct/redesign what exists in order to be the best current representation of me.

Jewelry Arts Inc presents: “Why Gold?” with Jeanette K Caines
Jewelry Arts Inc
22 E 49th St, Fourth Floor, New York, NY 10017
The founder of Jewelry Arts Inc, Robert Kulicke, was fascinated by granulation and other ancient arts like Byzantine enameling and was determined to learn the processes. Starting in the late 1950s, he experimented and drew other like-minded individuals to work together in his home studio. It took Bob and his then wife Jean Stark 23 years to understand and be able to teach granulation. Teaching was something Bob was particularly passionate about. He felt that keeping secrets in art was wrong, and he was determined to teach granulation and the other skills he mastered to all comers from his studio, which began formally in 1974 in New York City and still continues today as Jewelry Arts Inc. Bob’s students taught others and Jewelry Arts itself has continued to teach generations of students who, in turn, teach others. All modern granulation in America can be traced back to Robert Kulicke, who believed art was for the betterment of us all.
On Tuesday, November 13th, get an inside look at the studio form 6:30pm - 7:00pm and stay for a unique Gold alloying demonstration along with an exploration of gold’s eternal appeal form 7:00pm - 8:00pm.

Source of Information: Sourcing and Manufacturing Tour
Diamond District: 47th Street
Myron Toback Inc
545 5th Ave, New York, NY 10017 Suite 1000
Entrance on 45th St.
Join Diamond District legends, father/son duo Myron and Michael Toback to experience and learn the backstories of where many of New York’s jewelers source their materials, supplies, and manufacturing services in this exclusive small group tour.
Myron and Michael will begin at their own family business, Myron Toback Inc. Founded in 1963, the business has always been family owned and operated and now has three generations at the helm. Toback's is a superb source for metal, findings, chain, and tools, with a state-of-the-art assaying and refining operation.
The second stop on the tour features the studio/office of the superbly talented Robert Bentley. Robert Bentley began his love affair with gemstones while accompanying his grandfather to rock hound meetings in the 1950’s. He graduated from Pratt Institute in 1972 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. While he continued to paint and sculpt (he still does today), his fascination with gemstones took precedence and The Robert Bentley Company showroom was opened in New York City in 1994. Within the environment of The Robert Bentley Company’s extensive inventory of the best quality, best cut colored stones available today, Robert functions as a collaborator, instigator, and cohort within the jeweler’s design process, integrating his extensive knowledge and experience in gemology with an artist’s sensibility.
Third stop: Golconda, owned by designer, and jewelry historian extraordinaire Reema Keswani. Keswani laid the foundation stones for her business by working at Christie’s auction house. She studied jewelry design under A.V. Shinde, the legendary 20th century jewelry designer of the Harry Winston brand for over four decades, and wrote a book titled Shinde Jewels (Assouline, 2004). She often lectures on various jewelry topics and most recently served as the President of the American Society of Jewelry Historians, a national non-profit jewelry organization. Visitors will experience the energy and magical quality of gemstones, and the alchemy of metalsmithing that ignite Golconda.
The tour concludes at Daniel Castings, where Daniel himself will demonstrate how he transforms jewelers’ wax models into metal using the lost wax casting process.
We have feeling that Myron and Michael might take you on a few more adventures along the way!

“Jewelry as Figurative Representations” by Gaetano Pesce
Publicolor
20 W 36th St 9th floor, New York, NY 10018
"Since the category of the so-called "jewelry" was born, their characteristic and function have always been decorative. They can tell how beautiful a flower is, how attractive the geometric composition of a necklace is, how striking is the light of a stone and other reasons that remain in the realm of form. As far as I am concerned, and as the title explains, the functions listed before don't interest me. I started to make jewelry to experiment with innovative materials that I have been using since I was 21 years old. Their ultimate goal is not beauty, but the surprising richness of the materials I use. More recently I started creating jewelry that tell stories: the fishes swimming in the sea, the fruits of a market, the machines of time and more. They are figurative pieces that are read not so much for their preciousness or for the skill of the craftsmen who execute them, but because they evoke a simple reality, that we all know, introduced onto the scene of precious things."

Tour of Alex Šepkus, Inc.
A master of design and a true original in today’s world, Alex Šepkus is craftsman whose priority is beauty, whose insight and passion for his work are driving forces in life and whose abilities lie within his hands.
“I do not keep my technique a secret. It’s simply the thing that I do with my fingers that transfer the idea from my head to the material.”
A native of Vilnius, Alex received his graduate degree in industrial design from the Lithuanian Academy of Arts. His studies included interior design, glass blowing, sculpture, etching and graphic design with his graduate work in industrial design. With a strong understanding and respect for precision and balance, Alex developed a great passion for the intricacies of his craft, creating a world that is truly enhanced under a microscope.
Alex immigrated to the United States in 1988. Within a few years he met Jeff Feero, and together they formed Alex Šepkus, Inc. Quickly garnering the attention and respect of his peers, Alex earned the Jewelers of America New Designer of the Year Award within his first five years in business. Gaining national and international recognition, Alex’s designs are now coveted masterpieces and are showcased in over 100 of the finest specialty stores across the world.
Each piece of Alex Šepkus jewelry is hand crafted in his New York City shop. Eighteen jewelers bring Alex’s designs to life, and many have worked with Alex for over 10 years. Every piece is created under a microscope: from hand hammering, chasing, engraving, stone setting and final finishing- no small detail is compromised.

PROUNIS
Prounis Jewelry originates from Jean Prounis’ desire to pay homage to her ancestry. Her great-grandparent, Otto Prounis, was a co-proprietor of the Versailles night club in the 1940s, a celebrated cabaret that was located across from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Luminaries such as Edith Piaf, who made her US debut at the club in 1949, Texas Guinan, and Perry Como were regulars. The club was resplendent with the era’s finery-- custom silver, embroidered linens, and hand-gouached menus were the standard. The club’s legacy of beautifully crafted objects made its way to Prounis’ grandparent's home.
Prounis Jewelry made its debut in 2017. Each piece is hand-wrought in a custom shade of 22 karat gold. The collection incorporates precious and semi-precious gems, produced using ancient goldsmithing techniques. Jean refers to the aesthetic of Prounis Jewelry as “Meso-Greco-Aleppo”, calling out her love of antiquities, and her desire to carry on the family lineage of creating a treasured memory and object.
SOPHIE RATNER
Sophie Ratner was born and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, initially majoring in painting. Unsatisfied by an art form admired only at a distance, she longed for a medium that was both tangible and intensely personal. She switched to Jewelry design, attracted by the high levels of craftmanship required and the essential connection it creates between art and the human form.
Sophie Ratner Jewelry was launched in 2016 with a simple idea: that fine jewelry is meant to be worn every day and in every setting. Her jewelry is made by hand in her NYC studio using the finest quality materials, including ethically sourced fourteen karat gold and conflict-free diamonds.
ANTHONY LENT
Anthony Lent has been handcrafting fine jewelry for women and men for almost fifty years. His collections are based on the sculptural creations of master goldsmith and jewelry designer, Tony Lent. He has dedicated his life to the painstaking transformation of visionary images into intricate pieces of wearable art that are among the most detailed and conceptually profound works of jewelry being made today. Tony began his foray into the jewelry world while studying sculpture at the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts). While there, he discovered that many of his favorite artists, such Celini and Dürer, were also goldsmiths. He also encountered the works of various renowned jewelers, including René Lalique, René Boivin, and Mario Buccellati, amongst others.
In 1971, Tony left Philadelphia and moved to Germany to pursue his goldsmithing education at the Fachhochschule in Schwäbisch-Gmünd. In Germany, he immersed himself in the traditions and technologies of European jewelry design, acquiring the skills and knowledge that would become the foundation of his own work and teaching.
On returning to the United States a few years later, he began his career as a jeweler in New York City, working for some of the industry's most prestigious and celebrated fine jewelry houses. During this time, he developed a unique line of bespoke jewelry which was exhibited at galleries and represented by private dealers throughout the world. He also served during this time as a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where he was chairman of the Jewelry Design department from 1990–2001.
Tony is joined by his sons, David and Max, who founded the Anthony Lent brand in 2013. Together, they are working to preserve their father's legacy for future generations of discerning collectors of the most beautiful and captivating jewelry in the world.
Anthony Lent takes "fine jewelry" literally. We strive to meet the highest standards of quality possible and treat attention to even the "finest" of details as the number one priority in everything we do. All of our jewelry is designed and manufactured with pride in the USA.

Jewelry designer, collector and educator Cathy Gins exhibits magical dioramas of Visions from Jewelry Dreams at her West Village studio during NYCJW.
“I dreamed that my jewelry asked if it was still beautiful if no one saw it, and then asked me to give it new life. I heard that my crystal chains wanted to be rain, and that an opal stone wanted to be a mother. I saw that that zebras live in oceans, that sapphires and diamonds are plucked from the sky by angels, and that Jesus caught a fish wrapped in gold. I dreamed that I had so many dreams that I put each one in a box with windows so I could look inside to remember them. When I woke up the boxes were here, these dioramas of my Jewelry Dreams.”
Cathy Gins combines vintage jewelry and objects from a lifetime of creating and collecting to create her visionary scenes set in custom lit dioramas. Her many inspirations include the work of Joseph Cornell and Gene Moore for Tiffany & CO. Honoring the integrity of jewelry, pieces can be taken out of the dioramas to be worn as originally designed.
Join Cathy Gins in the studio November 14th - 17th, from 3:00pm - 7:00pm. Beverages will be served each day.
An Opening Reception will take place on Thursday, November 15th from 3:00 - 7:00pm.

L.J. West Diamonds and Antonio Severino presents a Spotlight on Art Nouveau reimagined with Pink Diamonds.
In this guided tour, Vice President Scott West will share an exclusive inside look at an upcoming design from the Scott West jewelry collection called The Art Nouveau Pink Collection where we reimagine an international style of art from the 1900’s with Argyle pink diamonds.
Antonio Severino master jeweler will guide our guests at how a Scott West jewelry item is created with a presentation of a final design masterpiece. The tour will discuss the background of Art Nouveau and the rarity of Argyle pink diamonds from jewelers studio.
Art Nouveau - is an international style of art, architecture and applied art, especially the decorative arts that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. Inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous and organic line.
Argyle Pink - Of the 20 million carats of rough diamonds that are produced annually at the Rio Tinto owned mine in Western Australia, less than 0.1% is pink. Argyle pink diamonds are rare; in fact they are beyond rare. With just an estimated half a decade of supply remaining in the mine, as time passes the Argyle pink diamond becomes evermore precious. The Argyle mine supplies approximately 90% of the world's pink diamonds, astonishingly, a whole year's worth of production of stones over half a carat would fit in the palm of your hand. The larger rare violet diamonds would barely fill a teaspoon. Hence, they are highly sought after by investors, collectors, jewelers and their customers, and celebrities. Prized by all who possess them; revered for their unique provenance, intrinsic beauty and extreme rarity.
Join NYCJW on Wednesday November 14th at 3:30pm for an exciting presentation about some of the rarest diamonds in the world inside the studio of one of NYC's most prestigious master jewelers. More information, including location, will be provided prior to event date.

Reception for Parallel Lines: Craft and Culture in Contemporary Jewelry from Isreal
Maison Gerard

JEAN-CLAUDE BONILLO (1939 -1917) – The Art of Jewelry By Fire Reception

Exhibition
Michal Lando is a jewelry artist living in Brooklyn, New York, who makes work out of nylon mesh. Michal began making jewelry after falling in love with nylon mesh, a supple, dramatic and incredibly lightweight material that was once used as a purely structural element in hats and clothing. Her latest pieces are based on controlled unraveling. The skeletal forms are constructed using a technique she developed by carefully applying heat to shape and structure the material into new forms, resulting in ethereal, delicate and otherworldly pieces. It is the tension between solid structure and fragility that continues to interest her as she explores new ways of working with the material.
Francesca Vitali strives to transform paper, a humble and ordinary material, into precious objects of unique and modern design. Paper affects everyday life continuously and in multiple forms: magazines, maps, shopping bags, etc. Francesca enjoys the idea that fragments of our lives will remain trapped in her paper jewelry. She earned her Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, but it was only when she moved to the US that she decided to take a leap of faith and gradually left her science carrier and began making jewelry using paper full time.
A native of Germany, Katrin Zimmermann studied and traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia before setting up her studio in Harlem. The exposure to such different cultures is evident in her approach to design -- she draws on a base that is international, multicultural and diverse. The focus of her design aesthetic is reduction: her goal is to bring out singularity through simplicity. The result is a line of sculptural acrylic art jewelry that is architectural, minimalist and modern: Ex Ovo. Katrin is also a member of the CFDA and a professor at Pratt Institute.
Doors at 6.30pm wine and refreshments.
Informal and lively talk at 7:00pm amongst the artists about their materials of choice, the challenges of making jewelry in non-traditional materials, and design insights.
Reception and viewing of all artists work from 7:30pm - 8:30pm.

Taisha Carrington recently received a BFA in Jewelry Design from Pratt Institute, where she was awarded the Mark Davis prize for most outstanding thesis collection. Interested in multiple facets of the jewelry industry, she gained experience interning at Oscar de la Renta. Carrington works from her personal studio creating bespoke pieces and developing new collections, with careful attention paid to sound technical construction. She views fashion and jewelry as tools for dialogue, social commentary, and activism—a view that governs her work, which blends cultures through its sources of inspiration and its evocations of places and peoples.
Ada Chen, a recent graduate of Pratt Institute’s Jewelry program, is an artist and jeweler who takes inspiration from Internet memes and household objects. At present, she works as a bench jeweler in New York City, learning the basics of the industry and further developing her voice as a Chinese-American woman through jewelry and other media. Chen creates jewelry that engages more than people’s money, incorporating into her craft much-needed discussions around Chinese and Asian-American identities.
Aaron Decker is a graduate of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. The recipient of the Marzee Graduate Prize recognizing promising international talent in jewelry, he also received the 2015 Mercedes-Benz Financial Services Emerging Artist Award, which provided him with a residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin. Decker lectures and teaches, and his writing has appeared in publications including Current Obsession,Art Jewelry Forum, and the catalogue for Dutch jeweler Ruudt Peters’ retrospective at CODA Museum, Apeldoorn. He regularly exhibits his work nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Derby and His Badges, a solo exhibition at Ornamentum Gallery, Hudson, New York; Design Miami, Ornamentum Gallery; Body Alchemy, the 2015 Hangzhou Contemporary International Jewelry and Metal Art Triennial, Hangzhou, China; American Gothic, Sienna Patti, Munich; and the Marzee International Graduate Show, Galerie Marzee, Nijmegen, Netherlands. He is represented by Ornamentum Gallery and Galerie Marzee.
Helen Drutt is the former founder and Director of her eponymous gallery in Philadelphia (1973–2002), which was among the first galleries in the United States to make a commitment to the modern and contemporary craft movement. In 1973, she developed the first syllabus for a college-level course in the history of the field. She has received numerous awards and two honorary degrees. Over the past forty-five years, her archives have served as an international resource for scholars and institutions. Drutt is a Trustee of the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, and a Fellow of the American Craft Council. She has built a permanent collection of contemporary crafts for the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, and is currently documenting an important development in the field. Recently, Drutt launched two exhibitions in Europe featuring American crafts.
Toni Greenbaum is an art historian specializing in twentieth- and twenty-first-century jewelry and metalwork. She has written countless journal articles, book chapters, and exhibition catalogues and is the author of Messengers of Modernism: American Studio Jewelry, 1940–1960 (Flammarion, 1996). She is currently writing a monograph on Modernist jeweler Sam Kramer. Greenbaum lectures internationally and is a visiting professor at Pratt Institute, where she teaches a course in theory and criticism of contemporary jewelry.
Holland Houdek holds an MFA from Syracuse University and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin–Stout. Her work focuses on medical implants, the body, and embodied experience. She has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and internationally in Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Lithuania, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, Switzerland, and Taiwan. The recipient of numerous awards, Houdek is a current finalist for MAD’s Burke Prize and a former resident of the John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry program, among others, and is widely published. Working closely with the medical industry through her five “Implants Series,” she has formed partnerships with organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, MedWish International, and Cleveland Clinic. She is an assistant professor at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York.
Eleanor Moty is Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she taught jewelry and metalsmithing from 1972 to 2001. Her pioneering work in the late 1960s and the 1970s in photo fabrication (photo etching and electroplating) resulted in articles and workshops through which she introduced the processes nationwide to the field of jewelry and metalsmithing. Currently, her one-of-a-kind brooches are inspired by landscape and architecture and feature unique quartz stones with dynamic inclusions, clarity, and beautiful cuts. In 2012, Moty was designated Master Metalsmith by the Metal Museum, Memphis, and honored with a retrospective exhibition. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries for more than four decades and is part of private and museum collections including the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York.

Sweigart has invited an inclusive group of women artists to respond to a component that was created out of research conducted while in France and Italy in the summer of 2018. This research about lace making as commodity and freedom, ties directly to feminism. This 3D modeled and printed brooch component was fashioned after an observed piece of 17th century Italian lace that had been damaged and was repaired at a later time by another's hand. The women were then asked to repair the work as it relates to them or their community. The result of these talented female artists is the transformation of damage to creation. This work encompasses the vestiges of both the originators hand and the history of lace-making.

This conversation will explore the complex and geographically expansive gamut of environmental and social issues associated with jewelry making. Panelists will illuminate the interconnectedness of the choices and actions of individual jewelers and consumers, illustrating how each of us truly contribute to our industry’s collective ramifications.
Moderator: NYC Jewelry Week is pleased to welcome Alexia Cohen as moderator of this talk. Alexia is a product designer, jeweler, and educator focused on prototyping objects and experiences that enable us to live in a more inclusive and resilient society. Alexia conceived and organized the ENVIROmetal symposium at Pratt Institute in 2012, which hosted various speakers in the sustainable jewelry field. In her own work, Alexia uses the human centered design methodology to develop projects for social impact.
Panelists:
Award winning jewelry designer Dana Bronfman will speak to her experience of producing, pricing, and marketing exquisite jewelry out of recycled and certified Fairmined metal and ethically sourced gemstones. Dana’s signature “quietly bold” pieces are fabricated by fairly compensated master jewelers right here in New York City. Dana also supports environmental and design-based youth empowerment programs through the sale of her pieces.
Jay Moncada, Co-owner of Perpetuum Jewels, will address ethical issues surrounding the global diamond trade and the importance of third party certification schemes in authenticating jewelry companies’ sustainability claims. Perpetuum Jewels is a certified responsible source for 100% post-consumer recycled gemstones. Jay serves on the Board of Directors of Ethical Metalsmiths.
Brooklyn Metal Works Co-founder Brian Weissman will identify common problematic studio practices such as chemical disposal and bench sweep collection, and provide suggestions for how Jewelers can implement safe and responsible protocols in their own workshops. Brian is a metalsmith who has shown work both nationally and internationally. He has years of experience facilitating a healthy working environment at Brooklyn Metal Works, as well as the various institutions where he has taught, including the Fashion Institute of Technology, University of the Arts, SUNY New Paltz, and the 92nd St Y.
Special Guest Presentation:
Following this panel, Jen Marraccino, Senior Director of Development at Pure Earth, will give a special presentation on the dire effects of mercury released into the environment due to unregulated small-scale and artisanal gold mining. Pure Earth’s Global Mercury program implements risk assessment and training programs for miners around the world to remediate and eliminate the toxic effects of mercury on the environment and human lives.

Thomas Gentille “Color Light Air”: Artist Conversation
The Great Room @ The Jewelry Library, Penthouse
1239 Broadway New York, NY 10001
This conversation takes place in conjunction with a new exhibition of Gentille's work that opens at Gallery Loupe on Nov. 10. This show - THOMAS GENTILLE: COLOR LIGHT AIR features an entirely new body of jewelry and jewelry-related watercolors completed since Gentille's solo exhibition at Die Neue Sammlung in Munich, Germany, in 2015.
Andrea DiNoto is a writer on art, craft and design. She has written about Thomas Gentille, and his work, for Metalsmith magazine and is the author of an essay for Untitled: Thomas Gentile American Jeweler published on the occasion of a 2016 retrospective at Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum in Munich.
An audience Q & A will follow the Conversation.
A selection of Gentille's work, from THOMAS GENTILLE: COLOR LIGHT AIR exhibition will be on display.

“ANTIQUEMANIA” Panel Discussion
Pratt Institute Manhattan Gallery, SCpS Gallery (2nd Floor)
144 West 14th St., NY, New York 10011
ANTIQUEMANIA artists, Isabelle Busnel, Kelly Jean Conroy, and Jeanette Caines discuss their respective creative processes and historical references found in their work. The presentations will be followed by a round table discussion between the artists and curators, Sasha Nixon and Ana Estrades. The discussion will be moderated by Karen Bachmann.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Isabelle Busnel's silicon jewel stomachers revisit Baroque and Victorian-era fashion, pattern, and decoration using a contemporary material.
Kelly Jean Conroy creates beautiful, delicate momento mori as odes to her memories of tenderly creating shrines for wildlife found expired in nature during her childhood.
Jeanette Caines executes intricate pieces by pulling inspiration from ancient sources. Her work displays a wealth of minute granulation and wire work. She seeks to perfect ancient techniques and applies them to a modern aesthetic.
The Speakers Bios:
Karen Bachmann Professor Karen Bachmann teaches at both Pratt Institute and Fashion Institute of Design. She specializes in jewelry, holloware, and decorative art. She has particular interests in medieval memento mori and 19th century sentimental work. She is a practicing studio jeweler and a former master jeweler at Tiffany & Co. She has had work published in Art Jewelry Today, and the Lark 500 series books. Written published work includes “Hairy Secrets: Human Relic as Memory Object in Victorian Hairwork Jewelry”. Her most recent publication is an essay on hairwork in the book “Death: a Graveside Companion”, Thames & Hudson.
Isabelle Busnel After a 15-year career in finance and banking, an urge to express herself in a different way led her to retrain academically. Ms. Busnel obtained her HND in Jewelry in 2008 and a Research MA in 2010, both from the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design (London Metropolitan University). Ms. Busnel is a member of Dialogue Collective, a group of London-based jewelers and silversmiths. She is currently collaborating with La Garantie, a French contemporary jewelry association.
Ana Estrades Ana Estrades is a jewelry historian, educator and curator, with an MA in decorative arts from the Bard Graduate Center. Currently, she teaches Gems and Jewelry at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York, and she is working as Sales Coordinator at Fred Leighton/ Kwiat Salon in Madison Ave. Her research interests range from early modern to contemporary jewelry and designers; collectors and collecting; and issues relating to provenance and authenticity. Some of her recent projects include research and interpretation for the digital interactive of the BGC exhibition “NY Crystal Palace 1853,” which won the 2017 New Media Award from the Victorian Society in America, as well as image research and copyright for David Yurman's publication with Rizzoli "Cable." Ana is very excited to be co-curating the exhibition "Antiquemania" during NYC inaugural Jewelry Week this November.
Sasha Nixon Sasha Nixon is a curator, jewelry historian, and practicing metalsmith. Her Master’s Degree is from Bard Graduate Center in New York City in the decorative arts, material culture, and design history. Her work primarily examines how contemporary art jewelry is influenced by ancient and historical jewelry styles and techniques. She received the 2018 Windgate curatorial internship at the Museum of Art and Design and is currently working with assistant curator Barbara Gifford on MAD’s upcoming exhibitions including the Future of Craft, Fake News and True Love: Fourteen Stories by Robert Baines, 45 Stories, and Anna Sui. Additionally, she was awarded the 2018 Society of North American Goldsmith’s emerging curators grant for her exhibition Statement Jewelry, 1887 BCE - Present: A View from the Jeweler’s Bench, scheduled to be presented by Bard Graduate Center Gallery February, 2019. Nixon presented her paper “Pixels Bejeweled: Modern Media, Contemporary Jewelry, and the Replication of Desire” at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s international symposium Digital Meets Handmade: Jewelry in the 21st Century. That paper will be published later this year. She looks forward to taking part in the vital discourse on adornment that will be New York City Jewelry Week.

More on the participants:
Alex Woo has been designing jewelry for over a decade to much acclaim and success. With her father, a master bench jeweler, serving as her mentor, Alex has grown up learning an appreciation for gems, precious metals and fine craftsmanship. From studying fine arts and jewelry design at an Ivy League university and abroad in Paris, to winning the National Women’s Jewelry Association’s design competition in 1998, art and form have always been her passion.
Born and raised in New York City, with her midtown Manhattan showroom and design studio, Alex embodies the spirit and passion of a true New Yorker. She draws inspiration from her travels around the world and has been awarded by a panel of experts from the JCK Show Design Center as one of the Rising Stars - one of the most prestigious and coveted accolades in the industry.
Challenging herself to find unique and intriguing ways to accessorize, each piece is handcrafted and often signed by the designer, so the quality is unsurpassed. As a direct result, Alex Woo has attracted an established client list of fashion editors, stylists, trendsetters, celebrities, and was named to Crain’s Business’s “40 Under 40” list of rising stars and successful entrepreneurs in New York.
Dynasty & Soull Ogun The creative fruit of identical twin designers, Dynasty & Soull Ogun, L'Enchanteur is a luxury concept brand inspired by the sciences, colour theory, numerology, religion, mythologies, magic, & fairytales.
L'Enchanteur seeks to communicate a story of craftsmanship behind each of their pieces, creating clothing, jewelry, and lifestyle items that redefine the meaning of an heirloom.
Embodying their motto, Transform Your Lifestyle, Dynasty and Soull push forward on an upward and unknown path to introduce a new vision of design decorum to the world.
Matthew Harris Born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the son of a seamstress, Matthew Harris arrived in the US at the age of 16 and attended Southern New Hampshire University to complete a B.S in Hospitality Management. After completing his studies, Harris discovered hi true passion in New York City - the art of Jewelry making. A self taught designer, he spends much of his time in the jewelry district learning and perfecting the craft.
After honing his craft, Mateo New York was launched in March of 2009. The brand initially focused on men’s jewelry, and in 2014 launched the women’s fine jewelry collection. The fine jewelry collections bare the brand's true aesthetic of simplicity and minimalism, drawing inspiration from modern art for the modern woman. Each piece is made from 14KT gold with a consistent use of diamonds and precious gemstones.
The brand is sold in some of the best retailers worldwide including Bergdorf Goodman, Colette, Harvey Nichols, Sak's Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, Moda Operandi, & Luisa Via Roma, to name a few. Mateo New York was selected by the Smithsonian Museum to be featured and sold at the African American Museum of Art and Culture in Washington D.C in 2016, and the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum of Contemporary Art in 2017. Mateo New York was a 2017 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist.

Cutting Edge – Contemporary Glass Jewelry exhibition presents the artistic creations of artists and designers who use glass as a vehicle of expression and who stand out for innovation and personality.
On view the works of Paolo Marcolongo, Biba Schutz and Agustina Ros, in an open dialogue with many voices, in which talent, vision and technique are balanced in exclusive virtuosities. The exhibition will also include some masterpieces made by the special guest and ambassador in the field of glass jewelry Linda MacNeil.
The selection aims to provide an unusual and avant-garde perspective on glass jewelry, an affirmation of the identity of research that is today increasingly independent, even if still connected, to tradition.
The exhibition is presented by R &Co. and the gallery is open Monday, November 12th – Friday, November 16th from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm, and on Saturday, November 17th from 12:00pm - 6:00pm. The gallery is closed on Sunday. No RSVP is required for this event.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a conversation organized by the Art Glass Forum, which will be held on Tuesday November 13th at St. Michael’s Church and titled: Cutting Edge - The use of glass and metals in contemporary jewelry and features Ilaria Ruggiero in conversation with Biba Schutz and Agustina Ros with special appearance by Linda MacNeil.
